Windows 10 install stuck at Checking for updates

Found on http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/insider/forum/insider_wintp-insider_install/window-10-install-stuck-on-checking-for-updates/e294932f-149e-412b-b996-6f1253973399?auth=1

I was updating one of the PCs when I ran into this problem , windows install stayed 20 minutes at checking for updates so I knew something was not going well.

After a brief search I found a working solution at the link mentioned, still it needed some tweaking so I decided to post it here.

So if your PC is stuck at Checking for updates while upgrading to windows 10 with the Microsoft provided tool :

  1. Go to Start – All Programs – Accessories – right click on Command Prompt and select “Run as administrator”
  2. Type net stop wuauserv  (this will stop windows update service)
  3. Wait till you get : The windows update service was stopped successfully.
  4. Type net start wuauserv  (this will start windows update service)
  5. Dont close the Command prompt window, you will need it later.

After that the windows setup will go from Checking for updates to Getting information on your PC and then will go to Getting updates , if you are getting stuck again (I was) repeat 1, 2, 3, 4  , after that the window will ask few install questions , if you want to keep apps and data etc , after selecting the options you want it will go again at getting updates and get stuck again .   Go in command prompt and type again net stop wuauserv , you will notice that when you type net start wuauserv a message will say the service is already started , that is ok . Now the install window will complete getting updates very fast and after the window will change to Ready to install.  Press install and from now on the installer wont get stuck and complete successfully

If this helps or you run into troubles and need help leave me a comment.

  1. This fix worked precisely as you indicated. Thank you for taking the hassle out of upgrading to win 10.

  2. Thank you so much! This worked perfectly!

  3. net start wuauserv not necessary if update is set to automatic or download and decide……. 10 will restart it immediately as it renews request to the server it’s using……… simply stopping it will slap the updater in the face well enough to wake it up. You may even see a big jump in download percentage that it isn’t showing you when it goes catatonic.

  22. This was the ONLY fix that worked for me to install Windows 10 after purchasing a “used-like new” Dell Inspiron 3147 with Windows 8.1 Update (which I couldn’t get to do much). I was ready to send my computer back thinking it was a problem with the current system. After your fix, I thought I was dreaming when I saw the install was actually progressing. Thank you very, very much!!!

  23. Worked like a charm! Thank you!

  24. it did not work for me, came up with system error 5 has occured access is denyed

  27. This worked for me, as well. Thanks for the help. Was almost ready to give up.

  28. It wont work with windows 8.1 :((

  29. I’m getting a “windows update could not be stopped” response in the command prompt. I have already installed windows 10 (but is running extremely slowly). Updates are supposed to resolve this lag, but it is hanging while trying to manually update and am hoping to force the updates. Any thoughts? (I already reset the allocated memory/page file size, which slightly improved performance, and my drivers all seem to be ok).

    • I had this as well, a restart fixed it.

    • I am currently having the same issue and unfortunately restarting and resetting Windows 10 had no effect. My drivers all seem fine. Because I reset the OS it’s pretty much a fresh install, and bios diagnostics on my SSD said that was working correctly. I may have to just bite the bullet and do a fresh install…

  30. Thanks BRO!!!
