Windows 8.1 – how to boot to desktop and add the list of installed programs

Windows 8 was a good release, better in terms of performance and resources usage than Windows 7. But it wasn’t all good. The interface changes were too harsh and this made a lot of people unhappy. The interface was made for touch screens and was painful to use with mouse and keyboard . Windows 8.1 is a good update. Is good to have the start button back.

Anyway after update Windows 8.1 still wasn’t quite right for my taste. My PC was going to Metro UI and I had to click the desktop icon to actually go to the desktop.

I fixed this by right click on taskbar – properties – Navigation tab and checked the box “When I sign in or close all apps on a screen, go to Desktop instead of start” .

Apply and you are set.

Now I had the good old desktop back and I could go to the new Metro if I wanted to but again something was missing . To be able to see the list of installed programs I had to go on Metro UI and then on the arrow at bottom of the screen to see the apps .

To fix this again right click on taskbar – toolbars – New Toolbar

Get-Start-Menu   A window will appear with a address field at the bottom “Folder” , write in the field : C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

Replace C with of your windows installation drive letter if other.Click Select button. That’s it! You’re done. Your new Start menu should now appear in the right side of the taskbar. Click on the double arrow icon to see all installed programs.

Now your PC will boot in to desktop mode and you will have the start button and the list of programs installed easy to reach without using any 3rd party software.

  1. When I right click the task – toolbars – new toolbar – where should the folder go?

  2. Is written there : A window will appear with a address field at the bottom “Folder” , write in the field : C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs
So instead of picking a folder just write the line above.

  3. Thanks mate, it works great

  4. TryingtolikeW8.1

I don’t find ProgramData, just Program Files and Program Files (x86) in the “P”s. Any suggestions?

  5. It’s a hidden folder. Just write the whole line in that field instead of trying to find it with select folder.

  6. AWESOME! Thanks KB3RCT

  7. Awesome! Many thanks!
